How it goes together

Back wall: plasterboard on dabs over blockThe board sits on adhesive dabs about 15 mm off the concrete block. Fixings have to cross that gap and bite into the block, not just the board.

Frame fixings into the block10 × 100 mm frame fixings (or a fixing made for dot-and-dab), 5 per shelf at ~40 cm centres. Snug, don’t overtighten: that crushes the board into the gap. Where you can, land them on a dab (tap the wall: solid sounds duller).

Back cleat44 × 21 mm planed timber, full 181.8 cm width. It runs continuously behind the pillar: the pillar stands 24 cm off the wall, so there’s room to drill and screw behind it.

Side cleats into the wall battensShort 44 × 21 mm cleats on each side wall carry the shelf ends. 5 × 70 mm wood screws into the timber battens behind the plasterboard; find them with a stud finder. Batten positions here are assumed (400 mm centres).

Hollow-wall anchor where there’s no battenHeavy-duty metal spring-toggle anchors through the board. One per cleat alongside the batten screw is plenty; the back cleat does most of the work.

Shelf in two halves25 mm board (oak or oak-faced ply to match the chest tops). The pillar runs floor to ceiling, so a one-piece shelf can’t go round it: each shelf is two boards meeting on the pillar centreline, each cut round it with a 3 mm gap. No load on the column, and no rubbing on its paint.

Pillar collarSplit hardwood collar, cork-lined, clamped round the column by bolts through its own two halves. It carries both board ends at the joint. Nothing is drilled into the cast iron. Glue is optional as a backup only: it grips the paint, not the iron.

RailEnd sockets screwed to the side walls (into a batten, or toggle anchors). At the pillar, a second collar with a socket on each side. Rail height (170–200 cm) is still to be decided, and the collar can go at any height.

ClearanceAbout 22 cm between the top shelf and the ceiling drop (267 cm): keep things up there under ~20 cm tall.

Load guide: fixed like this, each shelf comfortably takes a full run of folded clothes and boxes (30 kg or more). The weak link is the plasterboard, which is why the back cleat goes into the block.
